YOUR SAFETY MATTERS
Following the safety tips below, as well as following the instructions given to you by our base teams, will ensure that your holiday runs smoothly and safely.
The location of the BUTANE gas bottles is:
- The gas bottle(s) are in the locker(s) located at the back of your boat.
- The gas circuit is opened or closed by means of the valves on the appliances and the taps on the gas bottles.
In case of fire or smell of gas, close the SCREW DOWN TAPS on all BUTANE bottles immediately.
Before switching the gas on again (by unscrewing the screw down taps) make sure that the valves under the worktable are in their closed position.
Close the screw down taps and valves if the boat is not being used for a long period.
WARNING
Do not smoke or use a naked light while changing a BUTANE gas bottle.
Instructions on the use of oven and hobs
- Make sure that ALL hob and oven knobs are in the “off” position before opening the gas valve situated under the worktable.
- To light the oven or the hob firstly strike a match, then press in the knob and then light the pilot flame allowing it to burn for a few seconds – only then can you turn up the gas knob to the required value.
- Close the oven and hobs valve under the worktable whilst the oven or hobs are not in use.
WARNING
BUTANE gas burns and consumes oxygen in the cabin giving off an odourless carbon monoxide gas. Adequate ventilation must always be maintened, keep air vents free of truction at all times.
Under no circumstances should the oven or the gas hob rings be used to heat the cabins or salon areas.
Never leave the boat unsupervised whilst the oven or hob are in use.
Avoid contact with the oven door during and after use – it may become very hot so keep children well away.
The shore power cables are only useful when moored and the boat is connected to a shore power connection.
Certain boats are equipped with electric refrigerators.
- When you are navigating on the waterways, make sure the position of the power source switch is in position 1 (Batteries).
- When you moored, connect the boat to the shore power using the connector and change the switch to the position 2 (Quay).
Warning! To ensure sufficient battery power throughout the day and to recharge the batteries correctly, you are advised to navigate at least 4 hours per day.
If you believe there to be a gas leak or you can smell gas:
- Switch off all naked flames.
- Do not smoke.
- Close the GAS SCREW DOWN TAPS on the top of the BUTANE bottles.
- Do not switch on/off any light switches or radio.
- Do not use mobile phones inside the boat whilst gas odours are still present.
- Ventilate the boat until all traces of gas odours have disappeared.
- Contact the Nicols base who will advise of further checks and/or procedures to be carried out.
WARNING – NEVER USE A NAKED FLAME TO FIND A GAS LEAK !
IN CASE OF FIRE
- Take the on board fire extinguisher from its support. Undo the pin from the trigger.
- Aim at the base of the flames and then spray the fire.
- Once the fire is extinguished contact your Nicols base for further advice and an immediate replacement of used extinguishers.
IN CASE OF A SERIOUS FIRE
- Moor the boat and turn off the gas, diesel/fuel and electric (12V and quay) connection.
- Call the fire brigade using the telephone number 112 (an international emergency number for France, Germany, Portugal, Hungary and the Netherlands).
- Call your base of departure to inform them.
WARNING
It is essential to shut off the gas supply via the screw down valves on top of the BUTANE bottles before attempting to put out any fire. Failure to do so may result in re-ignition with a risk of explosion.
If you discover a leak onboard your boat:
- Ensure all of your crew put on the life jackets.
- Moor the boat, if possible where the water is not deep.
- Close the valves on the hull, if they are the cause of the leak. Check the bilge pump is working, put it on automatic if it isn’t.
- If the boat continues to take on water call the fire brigade using the telephone number 112 (an international emergency number for all European Union countries).
- Call your base of departure to inform them.
- Your boat has a first aid box that could be useful for minor cuts and bruises.
- Call a doctor (ask at the nearest village) or the fire brigade using the telephone number 112 (an international emergency number for all European Union countries).
- Whenever you leave the boat, don’t forget to lock it up and padlock all bicycles.
- Don’t leave anything in sight.
- Prior to your holiday we advise you to contact your insurer about your personal belongings which are not included in your cruise insurance.
Your boat is equipped with at least 2 or 3 extinguishers (depends on the boat model).
The Nicols base staff will show you their location as part of the introduction to the boat.
Adult-sized life jackets are present on board the boat in sufficient quantity for the crew. Please familiarise yourself with their location prior to departure.
Children’s life jackets and buoyancy aids are available on request from the base.
